Miina-Härma-Gymnasium beim XXV. Singfest in Tallinn

Laulupidu: Kadri Leppoja

„The idea of the Song Celebration is to show, through choral singing und playing of instruments, the national individuality of Estonians, like it was in the first Song Celebration in 1869. During the Soviet times, Song Celebrations were like acts of protest, like fighting against something. Now we can say that a song celebration no longer needs to be an instrument for fighting against something; it needs to be supporting something instead. In this case, ours is supporting the culture. I would compare a song celebration with a church service. It should be a place where people sense something they would not sense in everyday life. […]

The disguised and undisguised message is coherence of generations. Some songs have been especially composed in a way that they are sung by children’s and mixed choirs, or men’s and boys’ choirs together. Great innovation and striving for Europe lack meaning, if we do not recognise the value of intergenerational connection. An old person must reach out a hand to a young one, then the young person reaches out a hand to the old one. It is important to know that civilization does not start with me, because there was something before I came around.“
